Hosting Your True Identity
June 19, 2008

(Once you have your hosting account set up you will be to configure your email and create your website.)

Continuing where we left off last time, once you have your identity, i.e., you have registered your domain it is time to make use of that.  You now want to have that domain hosted on a server so the world can see it.

A webhost is the place where your website and emails are served from.  There is a wide variety of choices when it comes to webhosts.  They vary in features, ease of usability, and reliability.  For a great article explaining the different options and tradeoffs, see Domain Names and Web Hosting Explained

If you are just getting started, there are two companies that I highly recommend. They both are very highly respected by internet marketers, very reliable, relatively easy to use, and have great customer support.

They are  GoDaddy and Hostgator .  Your selection of which to use really comes down to personal choice.

You are already familiar with GoDaddy from registering your domain.  Many people like the simplicity of having everything in one place.  It makes it easier to keep track of everything and there is no finger pointing or confusion when it comes to problem resolution.

On the other hand, many people like the benefits of diversification.  By using different registrars and hosting companies (e.g., GoDaddy as the registrar and Hostgator as the host), if there is a problem with one, you are not completely out of service.  Also, Hostgator is a dedicated hosting company and has slightly more powerful hosting features.

Once you choose your hosting company, you can set up your website and your email .

Assuming you are using GoDaddy , your first choice in choosing a hosting plan is to choose between Web Hosting, Virtual Dedicated Servers, or Dedicated Servers.  You can refer to the article Domain Names and Webhosting Explained for a detailed description of each. On Hostgator your options are Hosting, Reseller, or Dedicated. However, unless you are an advanced user, the Web Hosting or Hosting option will easily be the best for you.

The next decision will be to choose between Linux and Windows as your operating system. The choice will depend on whether you will be using PHP or ASP programming language. Without going into detail here, my recommendation is to use Linux.  It is more reliable, more flexible, and more common.

Next, you have a choice of an Economy/Hatchling, Delux/Baby, or Premium/Swamp plan.  They are essentially the same, with two differences.  The first is how much of a power user you are.  Unless you really expect to have a ton of traffic and users and files etc, you will not need the Premium/Swamp plan. For most users, the Economy/Hatchling plan is quite sufficient.  However, I recommend selecting the Delux/Baby plan because it allows you to host an unlimited number of web sites whereas the Economy/Hatchling plan only allows you to host one.  You might not see the need to host more than one initially, but you will be surprised how convenient it will be to have multiple web sites once you get started.

You will be offered many more options as you proceed to check out.  Unless you have special needs or a specific application, you will not need any of these extra features.

Once you have your hosting account set up you will be to configure your email and create your website.

You will be able to setup multiple email addresses, free email forwarding, pop access, and web access. The details of setting up your email accounts will vary depending on whether you are using GoDaddy or Hostgator.   I will create some videos and more detailed descriptions in the future, but in the meantime, most of this will be straight forward by following the menus.

I will go into detail on setting up your website in the next newsletter.  In the meantime, look at different designs and think about whether you want a traditional website format or a blog based format.

Here is the link again, for your convenience:

Hostgator

You can use this link for both registering your domain name and hosting if you wish to proceed with that step.
