(Okay, maybe the year is still early. Do not let it slip by.)

As I was sitting here deciding what to write for this newsletter, I received a call from a company. The customer service rep asked me how my account was going. I was confused, so I asked what account. She said "Your MortgagePro News account". I then asked who she was with, to which she just gave me the company's name. I told her I did not have an account with them and she said, "Oh, okay. Thanks. I just wanted to make sure everything was okay. If you need our services please call back." she then hung up... What a wasted opportunity!

We all know how hard it is to get leads these days and the cost of getting these leads is skyrocketing!

This is a perfect example of a lesson I recently learned at a marketing training seminar. The lesson is "EVERY employee who could possibly come in contact with a customer is a salesperson!!" It does not matter if the employee is salesperson, a customer service rep, a desk clerk or a janitor. If they might interface with an employee they should be trained how to present themselves and how to represent the company. Any opportunity a company has to talk to a potential lead should be utilized.

In this case, she already had me on the phone, I did not hang up on her. She was so focussed on making sure I was happy with their service, that she did not use the opportunity to politely tell me what the company does and give me their phone number. This would not have cost the company any more money, yet could have increased their sales. By using more efficient training and better calling scripts a company can dramatically improve their marketing ROI, thus making the cost per lead go down and making them a much more competitive company.
